[#272]

This is my main demo I am trying to get out there with plays, Got Bass by Joyomofrobro. I consider my genre to be Funkore Techno, with the idea funk-style sound. A specific bpm 170 for this one, the track length is at 7 minutes. I looked up to older House tracks and wanted to get this sounding similar but went off on my own bpm once again. Am at odds all my life with even a single release started my music 1997 and now going onto 2027 with not one. In the late 1990s I was cleaned out for all my equipment twice so told myself I will not invest further without one successful release, to go at it in more of a slow approach. With income I can do a future without I cannot. I am in Canada and people here never cared for my music, I make more of the international sounding music. I went to places and they said what's this, no luck. I hope someone likes my music eventually in Canada or I am done. I did many tries to put out my music no one has taken anything in Canada, for 30 years now about. When I get a record deal it continues or I am left on my own as always to make what I can out of what I got. Here's to success!

@joyomofrobro

I can hear the frustration in this bro, especially after you’ve been working at it for so long. But I wonder if changing the goal might actually help.

Your music has always been very individual. It’s fast, raw, experimental and has quite an early electronic/rave sound to it. That’s going to make it harder to fit neatly onto labels releasing the more established genres, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t an audience for it.

I wouldn’t concentrate too much on whether people in Canada understand it either. Music is completely global now. Your audience could be anywhere. It’s just about finding them.

You’ve described what you make as Funkcore Techno, and honestly I’d lean into that rather than worrying too much about fitting somebody else’s definition of House or Techno. If that’s your sound, make it your thing.

I’d also seriously consider independently releasing a small EP rather than making getting a record deal the thing that decides whether you continue. You’ve already made the music, you don’t actually need a label’s permission to put it into the world.

Then the challenge becomes finding the small pockets of people who are into fast experimental electronic music, old-school rave sounds, underground techno, retro electronic/game music etc. Even finding 20 people who genuinely LOVE what you’re doing is a better starting point than trying to convince hundreds of people who were never the right audience.

I mentioned indie game developers to you before as well because I still think there’s potential there. Your sound could work really well in a retro/arcade/cyberpunk style game, and that opens up a completely different route for the music besides conventional record labels.

Most importantly, I wouldn’t see 30 years without a label release as proof that you’ve failed. It might just mean you’ve spent too long knocking on doors that weren’t really built for the music you’re making. I’d concentrate now on identifying exactly who this music is for, putting some of it out yourself, and going directly looking for those people.

And that’s something we can help you figure out on here too, as much as we can. Thats what this community is all about. I’d defo have a looking what @ogs suggested too in France as there could be a scene and some openings there for it. 👊

@joyomofrobro I would mate. Bandcamp is always a great place to start, and then if you want to put them on streaming services as well you could use something like Distrokid to distribute them all to Spotify and the other platforms.

I would really recommend getting a playlist together of your best tracks to send to indie game developers too. You could have a look through the developers on Steam, Xbox marketplace, Playstation, Nintendo store and even Apple and Android game stores and all the others to see the active developers making indies games… make a list, and go and find some of their contact details from their socials or on their websites to drop them a message. There is always opportunities out there. We just have to  go and find them these days. You got this 😎👊

@riggsy_dharkfunkh The biggest thing people do not often consider is that I have a disability since 1999 and try really hard at music because I am stuck at home. I am on part time work order in life and cannot drive or operate heavy machinery. So in Canada I am very low income with what I do have ever since I lost my job in 1999 unfairly. I now got a doctors note that says I cannot drive and no one hires without vehicle ownership its biased against me. I cannot take transit because I am not able to be alert to my surroundings and can get lost. I'm 80% of what I was but came up from 70%. That is why now I'm even more in need of help I cannot get anywhere years are the same!

@joyomofrobro

Ah man, I didn’t realise the full extent of what you were dealing with behind the scenes bro. That definitely puts some of what you’ve said before into a lot more context.

I can understand why it’s frustrating when so many of the obvious suggestions... getting a different job, travelling somewhere, networking in person, driving to things etc. aren’t realistically available to you.

One thing I would say though is that going from feeling 70% of where you were to 80% is still progress, even if it probably doesn’t feel like much when you’re dealing with everything else at the same time.

Maybe the better approach with the music is not trying to follow the same path everybody else follows, but finding the things you can do completely from home and building around those. Online collaborations, licensing, connecting with indie developers/artists online, Bandcamp, niche communities, remix work, sample packs, that sort of thing.

Your music is very unique. I genuinely think finding the right smaller audience for it is going to be much more productive than trying to make it compete with whatever happens to be popular.

And you’re always welcome to keep posting it here. We'll always support bro 👊
